Singapore : He was dragged off the plane kicking and screaming after getting drunk and attempting to force his way into the first-class cabin.

For his embarrassing antics, the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu, Sichuan province, has terminated its relationship with Lu Yong.

In a statement posted on its official Weibo account on Tuesday (Dec 8), the university confirmed that Lu had been teaching there as a guest professor since August. He was also the director of its Internet Finance Research Centre.

The university said that it “values the virtues and ethical conduct” of its teachers and does not tolerate unlawful behaviour.

“It is our belief that professors should be morally respectable so as to teach their students,” it added.

Lu is also said to be an associate professor of information sciences and technology at the Pennsylvania State University, according to his online resume. He graduated from Southwest in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

In a video posted online on Dec 6, police officers can be seen attempting to evict Lu from the New York-bound United Airlines plane just prior to its take-off from Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport.

The police were called in after Lu allegedly got drunk on champagne and ran around the plane before trying to wrangle a seat upgrade. Failing to get what he had asked for, he threw a tantrum.

China Daily reported that three police officers were assaulted by Lu – one suffered bruises on his chest after being pushed and kick, while the other two were bitten.

Lu was subsequently arrested and is still in custody.

Satoshi Omura, a distinguished professor emeritus of Kitasato University, has won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with William Campbell for their discoveries concerning a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm parasites, Sweden’s Karolinska Institute announced Monday.

According to the institute, Omura and Campbell — a research fellow emeritus at Drew University in the United States — discovered a new drug called Avermectin, the derivatives of which have radically lowered the incidence of river blindness and lymphatic filariasis, and been effective against an expanding number of other parasitic diseases.

Omura and Campbell won the prize along with Youyou Tu of China, who was honored for her discoveries concerning a novel therapy against malaria.

The institute praised the winning discoveries as having “provided humankind with powerful new means to combat these debilitating diseases that affect hundreds of millions of people annually. The consequences in terms of improved human health and reduced suffering are immeasurable.”

Omura, 80, is the 23rd Nobel recipient for Japan, and follows last year’s win by three scientists — Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura — in Physics. He is also the first Japanese to win a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine since Kyoto University Prof. Shinya Yamanaka in 2012.

The prize money of 8 million Swedish kronor (US$959,000) will be divided among the recipients, with one-fourth going to Omura. The awards ceremony will be held in Stockholm on December 10.

During his career, which has spanned half a century, Omura discovered more than 450 unique bioactive compounds and clarified their structures.

Born in Nirasaki, Yamanashi Prefecture, in 1935, Omura graduated from Yamanashi University with a bachelor of science degree in 1958. He received a master’s degree at the Graduate School of Science at Tokyo University of Science in 1963.

Omura earned a doctoral degree in pharmaceutical sciences in 1968 from the University of Tokyo, and a doctoral degree in chemistry from Tokyo University of Science in 1970.

Omura discovered antibiotics derived from microorganisms in soil and contributed to the development of medicine in a wide variety of fields. He has been especially praised for saving many people from epidemics of parasitic diseases in Africa and other tropical areas.

SOME OF China’s most famous and intrinsic painters will visit Thailand at the end of September to paint their respective perspectives of this country, co-organisers The Nation and China Daily announced in a joint statement.

The project is a unique celebration of the 40th anniversary of Thai-Chinese diplomatic relations and is another milestone in Asian arts, said Zhou Li, publisher and editor-in-chief of China Daily Asia-Pacific, and Pana Janviroj, president of The Nation. China Daily and The Nation are part of the Asia News Network.

The 10 artists will do as many as 80 paintings during their 10-day visit with exhibitions to be held in Bangkok on October 2-4 and later in China. The project is supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Dusit International.

The artists are painters of classical, modern and post-modern styles with many internationally acclaimed. They are Yang Xun from Sichuan, Wang Jiaxun from Jiangsu, Tang Qing from Anhui , Zhao Qingguo from Henan, Dong Xiyuan from Fujian, Guan Yuliang from Shenzhen, Kuku Chai Bukuk, Zou Li, Feng Xuewen, Cui Zhi’an from Liaohe.

“We are honoured to have invited these acclaimed artists to come to Thailand and to leave a legacy of paintings,” said Zhou Li.

Indonesia’s police are currently looking into whether the East Indonesian Mujahidin (MIT) terrorist group led by Santoso in Poso, Central Sulawesi, has links to the recent deadly bombing in Bangkok, said Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.

Kompass online quoted Luhut as saying that the terrorist group in Poso is being targeted by police.

No arrests have been made in relation to the recent bombing in Bangkok. According to some speculation, the Islamic State (IS) was behind the attack, and in Indonesia, the IS movement is allegedly supported by the MIT.

“We are currently pursuing [MIT]. I have received reports about their movements,” said Luhut, with his reports having come from the National Police chief Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti.

Up to 140 Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officers from Kelapa Dua in Depok have been flown to Poso to assist with the operation.

The terrorist group is said to have 30 to 40 members.

“If we don’t act, they can mobilize more power from various places, including weapons,” said Badrodin.

Study to explore the possibility for 2034

Asean is marching towards its one-community idea at the end of this year by introducing two major sports projects to encourage participation and commitment of member nations.

AKP Mochtan, deputy secretary general of Asean for Community and Corporate Affairs said Aseanhad reached an agreement to conduct a feasibility study in its bid to jointly host the 2034 World Cup. Mochtan said it was true a world football competition that Asean wished to host was still a long way off – but it needed the preparation and mechanism in order to deal with the requirements of Fifa, the world governing football body, in hosting the event.

Before making a formal bid, Asean would need thorough preparation for financing and selecting the hosting countries.

The World Cup is hosted every four years and the next competition is in 2018 in Russia.

Mochtan said the preparation and the studies involving the Asean people’s opinions on hosting the event would have to conclude by 2019. Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin of Malaysia, who proposed the idea, said after a meeting of Asean’s sport ministers that the grouping had less than four years to finalise the study and present it to the government.

The report of the study would be submitted to all Asean countries for approval before a joint organising committee was set up to look at the bidding process.

“Four countries will play host and we have made it clear that Malaysia is keen to be one of them. The Asean Football Federation will handle the organisational plans through the respective football associations,” said Khairy.

The minister said Fifa might not accept a proposal for the 10 countries to host the World Cup but it might consider the possibility of four country hosts.

Mochtan was speaking at a meeting of Asian New Network (ANN) members in Jakarta hosted by the Jakarta Post recently. The ANN is a network of 21 media groups including The Nation newspaper in Asian cities, organised to provide avenues for cooperation and to optimise coverage of major news events in the region. Mochtan also told the meeting about a regional sports contest he said was sooner than the World Cup, Asean Super League (ASL), a football competition among Asean’s football clubs.

“The competition could commence in 2016 or 2017. We are looking forward for it to happen. Sports are a mechanism that could boost people’s participation in Asean’s activities.” Asean Football Federation general secretary Azzuddin Ahmad said last month the federation was aiming to get the regional league off the ground next August. He said Fifa had given the green light for the ASL to go ahead.

Under the Super League, Asean countries – including Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar and the Philippines – will take part in the competition and there is no promotion or relegation. A play-off system would determine the winner. Eighteen teams are expected to eventually compete in the league. Competition will be held on a club basis and each team allowed to register two players from an Asean country and six players from a non-Asean nation.

Football Association of Singapore (FAS) president Zainudin Nordin had said the ASL could be an 18-team league and a concurrent cup competition – which would run for 10 months from early 2016 onwards.

FAS general secretary Winston Lee said that every country could submit a team, but they must qualify for it.

Petaling Street no longer seems to represent Malaysian culture and its people

ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Kuala Lumpur – Petaling Street, also known as the Chinatown of Kuala Lumpur, is a permanent fixture on lists of places for tourists to visit but many locals can also be found in the area, proving its overall popularity for a number of reasons.

Despite its popularity, there have been a number of times in the past when people felt that it had become more of a foreign land than one representing true Malaysian culture and its people.

One recent local visitor to the tourist hotspot said she had encountered a rude foreign trader while trying to purchase a bag.

“I saw a bag that I liked and asked the person manning the stall, whom I can only assume owned it as well. He dropped the price a little immediately after telling me its selling price.

However, knowing that haggling was the norm, I countered his offer with an even lower price and that was when I got a shock of my life. He started calling me names and even said I only knew how to buy garbage!” the visitor who wanted to remain anonymous said, adding that she quickly left the stall after that.

Such stories crop up every now and then while a quick look at the internet reveal that roughly equal numbers of visitors liked Petaling Street or think it is nothing special.

A small number also expressed their delight at the variety of food and snacks available as well as visits to the few temples located just off the main shopping and food streets.

I went to check out the street shortly after federal territories minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor made known his views that locals were allowing foreigners to trade there in exchange for rental per stall of between 8,000 ringgit (US$2,240) and 9,000 ringgit.

Perhaps it was a bad day or the wrong time but my visit revealed a quiet street, with a number of stalls closed while most of the open ones were run by locals, which could be caused by the minister’s surprise visit.

Wandering the streets slowly, many traders shouted out at me to take a look at their wares, most of which were the same from stall to stall.

A few of the more aggressive ones stood on the street, shoving their wares in my face, but what left me feeling uneasy were the unfathomable and somewhat menacing looks from those who stood quietly by their wares.

My experience was not particularly good but ended on a sweet note, thanks to a Sabahan trader selling T-shirts near the end of the street.

Stepping into the stall where various T-shirts with designs ranging from pop culture icons to abstract designs were on display, I asked the price for one T-shirt and was told it was a flat 20 ringgit, already quite cheap in my opinion.

“That is the best price I can offer,” the trader replied, even after I offered to buy more than one T-shirt in the hope of getting a better price.

He left me pretty much to myself to mull over the item. Deciding to go ahead and rack up the experience of buying an item, I told him I would take one new T-shirt with a specific design.

Rummaging through a large bag, he found that he had run out of stock and offered me the item on display, which prompted me to ask for a discount again.

“I will let you check it as much as you want. It is in good condition. It will still be 20 ringgit,” he said.

After finding nothing wrong with the T-shirt, I gave him a 50 ringgit note but when he gave me my change, I found he had thrown in an extra RM5.

I told him about the mistake but he waved it off and told me he would give me a special price after all.

Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun said bad hats would always be around the area and that complaints about the traders’ attitudes happen every now and then.

“There is nothing much to be done about it but I do believe those who have interests in the area should join the Kuala Lumpur Hawkers and Petty Traders Association and from there assert some semblance of order in the area,” he said.

Indonesia to revoke passports of citizens who join ISIS: Minister

Asia News NetworkIndonesia’s president Joko Widodo has agreed to issue a regulation allowing the authorities to revoke the passports of citizens who support the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The move comes as more than 350 Indonesians are said to have joined the ISIS in the past two years. About onethird left Indonesia specifically to go to Syria, while the rest were already studying or working in the Middle East before they decided to fight alongside the militant group to set up a separate state.

However, there are worries that should the movement fail to achieve its goal, these radicalised Indonesians might return home and therefore pose a security threat to their own country.

“We will revoke the passports of those who plan to go abroad to join ISIS and those who are already abroad with ISIS. They cannot be allowed to come home,” Coordinating Minister for Political, Security and Legal Affairs Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno told The Straits Times yesterday.

“We will come up with a regulation. It could be a presidential regulation,” he added.

Tedjo was speaking after he and law minister Yasonna Laoly as well as national police chief General Sutarman met Joko yesterday afternoon to discuss new antiterrorism measures.

“The government must first pass a regulation that clearly bans anyone from joining any organisation that promotes violence to achieve its goal. This rule must exist first, otherwise revoking the passports of ISIS supporters would have weak legal grounds,” terrorism analyst Adhe Bhakti told The Straits Times. Indonesians who declare support for the ISIS cannot be arrested under the country’s existing laws as long as they do not incite violence.

On December 27, six people planning to travel to Syria were arrested at the SoekarnoHatta international airport. They were charged with using falsified documents to apply for their passport.

The meeting also discussed the need to improve deradicalisation measures and tighten security in prisons.

“Terrorist inmates must be more closely monitored in prison. They are now allowed to receive visitors. We will have to fix this,” Laoly added.

Agreeing, Adhe said some inmates abused this right. He citied one instance where an inmate invited about 20 people and started to talk about militant ideology.

Taiwan seeks help in finding murder suspect

TAIWAN’S CRIMINAL Investigation Bureau (CIB) yesterday said it had asked its Thai counterpart for help in tracking down Hsieh Yuan-hsin, a key suspect in the murder of billionaire Shih Chia-chin.

According to police, Hsieh, Shih’s driver, allegedly abducted and killed his employer and abandoned the body. Hsieh’s two alleged accomplices – Lin Chih-hsiung, 31, and Cheng Ching-ta, 26 – were arrested on Monday night. Police believe that Hsieh fled to Thailand on August 18 using a forged passport – which he created by pasting his own photo into his cousin’s passport.

Prosecutors in the Taiwanese city of Taichung said they suspected that Hsieh had two escape plans – using his own passport to fly to Hong Kong or using a forged passport to flee to Thailand.

The CIB said it had confirmed with Thai police that Hsieh entered Thailand with his fake passport, adding that it suspected Hsieh was still in Thailand but might move on to Cambodia or Myanmar.

The passport used by Hsieh was cancelled immediately after Taiwan’s Bureau of Consular Affairs was notified of the case.

Hsieh was found to have a bank account in Hong Kong and had allegedly been to the city in May, CIB said yesterday, adding that it was still figuring out these facts’ relevance to the case.

In response to speculation that there may a fourth suspect in the murder, as recently discovered surveillance footage shows that Hsieh bought four lunchboxes on the day before the abduction took place, prosecutors said there was no reason to assume so.

The two alleged accomplices refused to answer questions after being arrested late on Mondy. Hence, the prosecutors carried out questioning yesterday morning. The pair confessed to participating in the kidnapping of Shih, but denied killing the victim, prosecutors said.

They claim to have assisted Hsieh in tying up the victim while Hsieh took all of Shih’s valuables. The three parted after Hsieh gave each of them NT$20,000 (Bt21,000), prosecutors said.

Shih was allegedly abducted by Hsieh on August 18 after being picked up at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei.

The suspects then called Shih’s family and demanded a ransom of NT$50 million. The victim was later found dead with more than 20 puncture wounds in his back in a mountainous area on the night of August 24, police said.

Fiercely handsome Mariano Flormata Jr, aka Neil Perez, says he is a shy, simple guy who joined the pageant to promote a healthy lifestyle

He oozes sex appeal every time he poses for the cameras. Pictures of this man are widely posted and shared in social media, not only in his home country Philippines, but also Thailand. Off-camera, he makes a living responding to bomb threats at airports.

Neil Perez, one of the candidates in the 2014 Misters of the Philippines contest, is actually police officer Mariano Flormata Jr, a bomb and explosives technician assigned to the Philippine National Police’s Aviation and Security Group (Avsegroup) unit.

In his promotional photos as one of the 26 contestants, the 29-year-old Flormata – “Mar” to family and friends – looks fiercely handsome, with expressive eyes and long eyelashes.

In his blue police uniform, he exudes an entirely different aura – a shy, simple guy whose love for physical fitness has inspired him to join the male pageant.

“I really just want to promote a healthy lifestyle among my fellow policemen. This is all new to me,” Flormata told reporters in Camp Crame on Tuesday.

Flormata has had no modelling experience of any kind and the Misters of the Philippines was his first try to join a male pageant. Fortunately, he was screened as one of the 20 finalists, from whom four winners will be chosen.

The 180-centimetre-tall Flormata will represent the PNP and Tondo, Manila, where he grew up.

The four best-looking men in the competition will represent the Philippines in international male pageants.

Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson chief superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac congratulated Flormata for making it as a finalist, adding the PNP welcomes activities that bring the police closer to the community.

“These extracurricular activities are welcome as long as these do not interfere with his duties as a policeman. Such activities show that we policemen are ordinary people, too,” Sindac said.

He pointed out that the pageant Flormata joined was a no run-of-the-mill contest and that it was a legitimate, respectable competition.

Encouraged by a friend

“This competition, should he win, could bring a good name not only to the PNP, but to our country as a whole,” Sindac said, noting that the contest also promotes gender sensitivity.

As a technician at the Avsegroup, Flormata responds to bomb threats at Ninoy Aquino International Airport, where he is detailed.

He is also trained in basic aviation security and aircraft counter hijacking, among others.

Flormata joined the contest, sponsored by Prime Event Productions, early this year at the encouragement of a friend.

His lack of experience in modelling did not faze him – he believed that his mission to promote physical fitness was important.

“I went to the screening at Fishermall in Quezon City. When I was chosen, I told my boss [chief superintendent Christopher Laxa] about it. He was surprised but very supportive since I wasn’t doing anything bad,” Flormata said.

The pageant finals will be held in Makati City on September 7.

A Facebook fan page dedicated to him had 932 likes as of Tuesday afternoon. It features photographs of Flormata in various poses and outfits.

Since joining the PNP in 2008, he has advocated a healthy lifestyle. He works out practically every day since he is required to be fit, as a then-member of the Avsegroup’s special reaction team.

Asked if he has a special diet, the policeman said he eats whatever he wants as long as he works out just as hard.

Flormata cuts a dashing figure in his uniform, which some policemen find hard to wear because of their thick waistlines and bellies.

“I’d like to tell my fellow lawmen that it’s really easy to be physically fit. All it takes is discipline and a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

‘Always a policeman’

Flormata, however, maintained that his heart would always be with the PNP, despite the prospect of landing a more glamorous job and of a heftier pay if he wins the contest.

His dream since childhood was to be a policeman, taking after his father Mariano Sr, who was assigned to the Manila Police District.

“My priority is to be a police officer. In joining the contest, I want to be a role model of physical fitness for my fellow lawmen. I want to encourage them to live healthier lifestyles,” he said.

He attends contest schedules during his days off as a policeman, or by going on leave.

The attention and the promise of fame don’t seem to faze him – more than anything he still wants his job as a cop.

“I really want this [job] more than anything, I like being here. I will not trade my job as a policeman for anything,” Flormata said.
