The northeast city of Nong Khai is all set to hold its inaugural marathon on December 6 and offers runners a scenic route along the banks of the Mekong River. Designed for all fitness levels, the event features a full marathon of 42.195 km, a half marathon of 21.1 km and a fun run. Nong Khai shares the Mekong River with Vientiane in Laos and is also a gateway to Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan.

Connecting Phuket with Hat Yai

Following its inaugural flight earlier this month, Bangkok Airways has now formally launched its daily service between Phuket and Hat Yai. The flight is operated using an ATR72-500/600 aircraft with seating for 70 passengers and departs Phuket at 7.20am. The return flight takes off at 9.10am. Tickets cost Bt1,890 and flight time is about an hour. Phuket and Hat Yai are about six hours apart by road.

If you’re a keen cyclist and have some free time coming up at the end of this month, head up to the Northeast for the long-distance “Ride to Khong”, a three-day competition divided into three different stages – smooth, steep and challenging. Taking place from October 29 to November 1 along theMekong River, it will see cyclists pedalling 248 kilometres through Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan provinces. Organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand to promote the Northeast as a sports destination, the event is aiming to attract biking enthusiasts from Australia, South Korea, Malaysia and Europe as well as from the Asean member states. The winner will be honoured with the Royal Trophy of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn.

Tai Yai (or Shan) people in Mae Hong Son will build wooden castles, decorate them with colourful paper and illuminate with lanterns to welcome the Lord Buddha. Herd’s up

Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas has signed an agreement with Elephant Parade to bring the world’s largest open air art exhibition of 88 life-sized brightly decorated elephant statues to Bangkok. The exhibition will see a herd of 1.5-metre-high elephants – all specially decorated and hand painted – exhibited at key locations in the city. You can see them from December 1-18 at Parc Paragon at Siam Paragon, at Asiatique on the banks of the Chao Phraya River from December 20 to January 11 and in Lumpini Park from January 15 to 29.

Thai low-cost airline Nok Air has announced it will be increasing flight frequency to better handle tourist traffic during the upcoming high season. Based at Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport, the airline will add more daily flights to Phrae (two flights), Buri Ram (two flights), Nakhon Phanom (two flights), Loei (three flights), Mae Sot (four flights), Lampang (four flights), Chiang Rai (five flights) and Phuket (eight flights). Thai water buffaloes might not be as aggressive as Spanish bulls but they can certainly give the bulls a good run for their money and they’re a lot more fun. Chon Buri province, about an hour’s drive east of Bangkok, is hosting its annual Buffalo Races from October 24-26. Race day is October 26 when. beefy buffaloes, skinny buffaloes and white buffaloes will race against each other over a 100-metre-long grassy strip, leaving a huge cloud of dust in the air. You’ll be surprised – and terrified – at the beasts’ terrific speed but poor sense of direction.

Spirit of the sea

Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province celebrates the spirit of the sea on September 26-27 with a little-known rite that has been practised in local Chinese and fishing communities for more than 100 years. The ceremony pays homage to lives lost to the sea and is centred on San Chaomae Taptim, the revered shrine in the resort town – where local fishermen build a “boat of fortune”. Cultural shows will take place at night before the fishermen release the boat into the sea..

Seafood sensations

Cha-Am, the much-loved beach town in Phetchaburi province, is now playing host to the annual seafood extravaganza known as “Kin Hoy Duu Nok Took Muak”. Running through to Saturday, it features freshly fished mussels, oysters, lobster, squid and red snapper in a variety of dishes – often simply steamed with herbs or pan-fried – guaranteeing you will eat more than you deserve! The festival also offers squid hunting and bird watching to improve the digestion. Cha-Am is about two hours drive to Bangkok’s South.

Training deal inked with Boeing

Thai Airways International recently signed a pilot training agreement with Boeing, under which Boeing Flight Services, a business unit of Boeing Commercial Aviation Services, will provide flight training for the Thai Airways International’s 787-8 fleet at Boeing’s Singapore campus. The deal will provide the airline with training for nearly 50 crewmembers by the end of the year. Thai Airways took delivery of its sixth B787-8 in August and is waiting delivery of two 787-9s in 2017.

Adding a capacity increase of 57 per cent, the four new flights will introduce connectivity from most cities in the Americas for the first time, as well as improve connections to a number of key destinations in Europe and the Middle East via one convenient stop in Dubai. “Since the launch of our flights to Phuket in 2012, the demand has increased dramatically. The fact that we are now adding a further four weekly flights highlights not only the desirability of the destination but also the wish of passengers to travel with Emirates,” noted Thierry Antinori, Emirates’ Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer.

A new Dusit Princess hotel is scheduled to open in 2018 at Cebu, the Philippines, the group’s second property in the country after the Dusit Thani Manila.
