Part of HM the King’s agricultural research and development centres, Angkhang is a famous winter destination where visitors are blessed with colourful flowers and chilly weather.

The National Theatre, Bangkok, plays host to Thai and Cambodian traditional dance this Saturday. The Thailand International Swan Boat Races 2015 will rock the Chao Phraya River this weekend as international teams race traditional Thai-style long boats in various classes (the largest has 55 paddlers) along the river underneath Rama 8 Bridge. The races, which are being held on both Saturday and Sunday, are divided into two categories: Swan Boat Race (22 paddlers) and the traditional Thai Long Boat Races (30 and 55 paddlers).

Armless Thai dwarf Ekachai Wankaew recently completed his “Impossible Mission” when on December 5, in honour of His Majesty the King’s 88th birthday, he reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Affectionately known as “Mr Penguin”, Ekachai was born without arms and is an aspiring artist who has just completed a portrait of the King. For his “Impossible Mission” campaign, Ekachai was trained by experienced mountaineer Vitidnan Rojanapanich.

Quest for history

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is organising what, at more than 25,000 kilometres, is probably the longest overland trip ever made to discover the origins of the Thai people. The 40-car caravan will travel from the Altai mountain range in Central Asia to Bangkok via Xinjiang, Sichuan, Yunnan and Chiang Rai. Historians once surmised that Thais emigrated from the Altai region but this theory is now outdated, with the country made up of many groups of people who have been here since the beginning.

This unique ceremony will be celebrated on November 14-15 in traditional Lanna style with residents gathering the cotton from the field and spinning it into a yarn before weaving a yellow robe. The yellow robe of Chula Krathin must be completed in one day. The locals will celebrate the yellow robe with a long and beautiful procession through the rice paddies before offering |it to the monk.

Khon Kaen province in Thailand’s Northeast is to play host to the International Silk Festival, “Pook Xiao” and the 2015 Red Cross Fair from November 29 to December 10 in front of City Hall. Highlights include an international seminar and business matching event plus sericulture and silk-weaving exhibitions.
